How Can Retailers Increase In-Store Traction?
Traditional retail has faced a barrage of challenges from the expansion of e-commerce to COVID-19. Now, in 2022, retail is preparing for the onslaught of a recession. Business consultants, like Deloitte, have been monitoring the decline and report an ongoing downturn since 2008. So, what’s next for the high-street?
How to Design Happy Spaces: A Guide to Placemaking
At Buttercrumble, we always state that “design is about solving problems within a set of limitations”. This is even more true for environments. The landscape is infinite, not just a flat sheet of paper. So, the scale of observation is vital (Ingold, 2013). Based on findings from a What Works Wellbeing report (Mansfield, 2020) we believe there are five key areas to consider. What are they and how do can you achieve success?

Playtime Paris: Our Experience in Film
We were delighted to share our interactive artwork on an international stage at the recent Playtime Paris Show. We were able to engage the public in the arts, whilst also welcoming a new global audience on a larger-scale. View this short round-up film!
Live Illustration at York Culture Awards 2018
York is a city of beauty, talent and heritage, so it’s no surprise they have their own Culture Awards evening, hosted by Make It York. York Culture Awards is an annual celebration of the city’s best cultural and arts organisations and events. We were so excited to be invited to record the event through the power of illustration.
Live Illustration for York Fashion Week at Marks & Spencer
York Fashion Week 2018 (by Fashion City York) was a stylish week-long festival celebrating fashion and creativity across one of our favourite cities, York. When we first discovered this, we were eager to get involved and it’s lovely to now be a part of the festivities! One way we’ve been contributing to the magic is through live illustration. We were delighted to be asked to illustrate portraits at the VIP Launch Party at Marks & Spencer.
Whilst at the party, we interacted with local bloggers, entrepreneurs, fashion designers, stylists, makeup artists... the list goes on and on! Everyone loved socialising and celebrating. Our live illustration offered respite for those in need of a sit down! Those that did sit with us, had a lovely experience receiving a bespoke portrait drawn by us live on the night. Our favourite part of the process is seeing the guests’ faces light up as they receive their illustrations.
This new beginning motivates us to reinvent ourselves, exercise our strengths, and remedy our foibles. I find this especially true of our young generation climbing social ladders and (literally) growing out of their former selves!
