Buttercrumble Takes Part in ArtWaves Festival 2021

The Buttercrumble team was honoured to take part in this year’s ArtWaves Festival. The festival boosted community spirit during the challenging COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, it helped raise funds for charity, The Critical Fish, through the contribution of painted bird sculptures.

The flock of birds was brought to life by UK-based artists (including ourselves) to create a vibrant and diverse art trail. It saw each bird nesting in shop windows across the coastal town of Bridlington.

We made waves with our geometric and graphic style, inspired by mid-century modern design. We painted our feathered friend using acrylic gouache before varnishing it for a glossy finish! You can watch our process video below:

Our sculpture was later sold at the auction to support art projects in the area via The Critical Fish charity. We were keen to support this cause as we (Chloe and Abigail) were born and raised in the seaside town of Scarborough. We understand the importance of arts engagement within these communities.

We are delighted to be receiving funding from the sale of the birds produced for ArtWaves. We think this is a fantastic project that will create a fun and interesting trail around Bridlington, showcase the creativity of a range of artists, whilst raising money for arts organisations such as ourselves. We will use the funding to commission and present work by artists and writers — many from the local region. This is a difficult time for the arts and we are so grateful to have this support from a local arts organisation.

At Buttercrumble, the studio is socially-engaged, so we do what feels right, good and supportive! We are looking forward to next year’s festival and hope to collaborate on subsequent community projects.
